Karnataka Headmaster Suspended For Silent Protest Over Demand For More Classrooms

Veeranna Madiwalar was suspended by Belagavi Zilla Panchayat for staging a silent protest demanding the construction of four additional classrooms for his school.

The suspension of the headmaster of a government primary school in Ambedkar Nagar, Nidagundi, has ignited widespread criticism from educators, intellectuals, and political leaders across Karnataka. Veeranna Madiwalar was suspended by Belagavi Zilla Panchayat for staging a silent protest demanding the construction of four additional classrooms for his school, citing deteriorating infrastructure and overcrowded classrooms.

The suspension order accused him of conduct "not befitting a government servant", as per a report on The Hindu.

Move Receives Backlash

The move has drawn sharp backlash with many accusing the government of silencing educators who speak out for basic necessities. The Department of School Education and Literacy later confirmed the suspension.

Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra condemned the action as “cruel” and politically motivated. Support has also poured in from  Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, which urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa to prioritize addressing the teacher’s concerns rather than penalizing him for peaceful advocacy, as per a report on Deccan Herald.

This isn’t Madiwalar’s first run-in with the system. In 2022, he was issued a disciplinary notice after composing a brief poem criticising a government proposal to merge smaller schools — a move he believed would disrupt learning in rural areas.
