Governor's rule in Jammu & Kashmir as President approves Vohra's report

It will be the eighth spell of Governor’s rule in the state in the last four decades.

New Delhi: As the Jammu and Kashmir government dismantled after BJP’s sudden withdrawal of support to the coalition with PDP and resignation of CM Mehbooba  Mufti, the present state of affairs will now be headed by the Governor. The decision on implementation of Governor’s rule was taken today by President Ram Nath Kovind as he approved the report submitted by Jammu & Kashmir Governor NN Vohra. The President who is on his official foreign tour has signed the report and sent it via fax to the home ministry. The Governor's rule will now be imposed with immediate effect in the state. It will be the eighth spell of Governor’s rule in the state in the last four decades. Governor NN Vohra forwarded his report to President for imposition of Governor’s rule in the state on Tuesday. A copy of the report has also been sent to the home ministry. After ascertaining from Kavinder Gupta and Mehbooba Mufti that their parties do not intend to explore alternative alliances in the state,  and after his consulation with all the major political parties the report was forwarded to the President’s office under section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. Vohra sent the report to Ram Nath Kovind after he had conversations with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, BJP state chief Ravinder Raina, NC vice president Omar Abdullah and Congress state president G A Mir. "The governor received a letter by fax, jointly signed by Ravinder Raina and Kavinder Gupta, state BJP president and leader of BJP Legislature Party respectively, about withdrawing BJP's support to the coalition government," PTI quoted a Raj Bhawan spokesperson as saying. Vohra, a former civil servant, became the Governor on June 25, 2008. The BJP pulled out of its alliance with the PDP on Tuesday, saying it has become impossible to continue in the government in view of the growing radicalism and terrorism in the state. Governor’s rule in the valley: Jammu and Kashmir has come under Governor's rule on seven occasions before in the last four decades and this is its eighth spell. Also, it is for the fourth time that the state has been placed under central rule during N N Vohra's tenure as Governor. Ironically, late PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the father of incumbent chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and her predecessor, was an important player in the political developments of the state that led to the imposition of central rule on the previous seven occasions.
