Himachal Pradesh Earthquake: 5.3 Magnitude Quake Jolts Chamba, Tremors Felt In Punjab, Haryana

The earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred at 9:34 pm on April 4 at a depth of 10 Km in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, as per National Center for Seismology.

Mild tremors were also felt in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana.

There have been no immediate reports of any injuries or damage. According to a report in PTI, the tremors lasted for a few seconds and did not result in any loss of life or property damage.

A video shared by news agency ANI showed a ceiling fan in a Chamba home shaking due to tremors.

"I felt a strong jolt lasting a couple of seconds. Just when I was thinking of rushing downstairs, the tremors stopped," said Sanjay Kumar, a Chandigarh resident.

On this day (April 4) in 1905, a massive 8-magnitude earthquake had shook the Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, leading to widespread casualties and destruction. 

According to NCS records, more than 20,000 people had died in the disaster in the Western Himalayas.
