Weather Update: Heatwave To Continue In Delhi, UP, Punjab & Other States. IMD Issues Alerts

Delhi’s base station, Safdarjung Enclave has been predicted to record a temperature of 44 degree Celsius as against 42.5 degree Celsius on Friday. 

New Delhi: Respite from scorching heat does not seem in sight in north Indian regions of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh amongst others as the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave to continue for today and tomorrow. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ in the national capital warning that the mercury may rise up to 46-47 degree Celsuis in several parts of the city. 

The MeT Department has also issued a ‘red’ and ‘orange’ alert in several parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. 

“Severe heatwave prevailing in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, UP, MP, Rajasthan & Vidarbha. Temperatures are ranging from 40-46°C which is above normal temp. Red & orange warnings were issued for parts of Rajasthan, MP & Haryana,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, quoted by news agency ANI. 

 

Mohapatra added that the heatwave conditions will persist for today and tomorrow after which it is expected to decrease from May 16 onwards. 

“Heatwaves will continue for today & tomorrow. It'll gradually decrease from May 16 onwards. On the night of May 15, there'll be a western disturbance in northwest India,” he added. 

“Rainfall with thunderstorms are expected in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand along with adjoining plains of north India. Thereafter, temperatures will decrease & heatwave will abate,” Mohapatra said.

Delhi on Friday saw the mercury rise to 46.1 degrees Celsius at Najafgarh. The weather stations at Jafarpur and Mungeshpur had recorded maximum temperatures of 45.6 degrees Celsius and 45.4 degrees Celsius, respectively, six notches above normal for this time of the year, reported news agency PTI.
