Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation Election Results: BJP Steals The Show, Wins 41 Out Of 44 Seats

The GMC election was the first major poll to take place in Gujarat after Bhupendra Patel took over as the chief minister.

New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat on Tuesday registered a landslide victory in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) election by winning 41 out of 44 seats.

The GMC election was the first major poll to take place in Gujarat after Bhupendra Patel took over as the chief minister.

The results, however, proved to be a major setback for the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The Congress was able to bag only two seats, while the AAP won one.

The BJP and Congress had fielded their candidates on all 44 seats while the AAP was in the fray from 40 seats.

Polling for the GMC took place earlier on Sunday. Out of the total 2.8 lakh registered voters in Gandhinagar, 56.24% had exercised their franchise.

All eyes were on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP in the GMC election as the new entrant in Gujarat had won 27 out of 120 contested seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation election held earlier this year.

Besides the GMC, three other municipalities, including Okha, Bhanvad and Thara, also went to the polls on Sunday.

The voter turnout in Okha and Bhanvad was 55.07% and 62.27% respectively, while Thara recorded a voter turnout of 73.55%.

The Congress gave a tough fight to the BJP in the previous GMC election as both parties bagged 16 seats each.
