Five Times Shashi Tharoor 'Upset' The Congress

Shashi Tharoor, who has represented Kerala in Parliament four times, also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his meeting with US President Donald Trump, drawing criticism from the party leaders.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's praise for the rival Left government in Kerala has sparked a row. During The Indian Express' Malayalam-language podcast 'Varthamanam', the diplomat-turned-MP also flagged the absence of a Congress leader in the state.

The leader who has represented Kerala in Parliament four times also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his meeting with US President Donald Trump, drawing criticism from the party leaders.

Tharoor defended his remarks saying he has other things to do if Congress does not want his services. "If the party wants me then I will be there for the party. If not, I have my own things to do. You should not think that I don't have any option to spend time. I have options. I have my books, speeches, invitations from across the world for talks," he said.

Here are the five major controversies involving Tharoor:

Article Praising Kerala Government (2020): In February 2020, Tharoor authored an article lauding the entrepreneurial growth under the Left government in Kerala. The piece sparked controversy within his party, leading to internal discussions. However, the Congress leadership later stated that the matter was resolved.

Thiruvananthapuram Airport Privatisation (2020): In 2020, Tharoor favoured the Centre's decision to lease out the airport to Adani Enterprises. He had said that the privatisation would help expand its potential and attract investors.

Praise for Narendra Modi (2014): In 2014, Tharoor publicly praised certain initiatives of PM Modi, which was seen as a deviation from the Congress party's stance. This led to his removal from the position of Congress spokesperson.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Controversy (2010): Tharoor was embroiled in a controversy regarding the IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Allegations surfaced that he had misused his position to secure a stake in the team for Sunanda Pushkar. The uproar led to his resignation as Minister of State for External Affairs.

"Cattle Class" Remark (2009): In September 2009, Tharoor faced criticism for referring to economy-class air travel as "cattle class" in a tweet. The remark was perceived as insensitive, especially during a time when his party advocated austerity measures.
