Demonetisation: Only senior citizens allowed to exchange old currency tomorrow

NEW DELHI: As citizens across the country continue to face hardship in exchanging the now-defunct notes and struggled to purchase essentials to meet their daily needs, the Indian Banks' Association on Friday said that only senior citizens will be allowed to exchange old currency notes from banks on Saturday. The association, however, maintained that other banking operations such as deposit and withdrawal of cash will be carried out as usual. Chaotic scenes could still be seen on Friday at banks and ATMs as people queued up for hours to get cash to meet their daily expenses even as bank branches and cash vending machines struggled to manage the rush. People also faced inconvenience in purchasing milk, vegetables, medicines as they did not have adequate small currency notes. At various hospitals in the city, patients and their family members faced inconvenience in buying medicines, food and availing transportation. (With PTI inputs)
