Delhi Govt To Conduct Sero Surveillance Every Month To Break Covid-19 Infection Chain

New Delhi: In order to curb the spread of COVID-19 virus in the national capital, Delhi government has decided to conduct the sero-surveillance every month. State health minister Satyendar Jain, who has recently recovered from the Coronavrus infection, said that the exercise will be carried out from the 1st till the 5th of every month. Sero-surveillance or the antibody testing repeatedly done over time, generates important evidence for assessing the spread of the pandemic from time to time. Through the survey, an overall assessment of COVID-19 infection is done and a comprehensive strategy is drawn based on findings of the survey.

A Hindustan Times report quoted Sujeet K Singh, director of the Union health ministry’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as saying that "although Delhi’s COVID-19 situation seems to be improving, now is not the time to get complacent." "Sero surveillance needs to be done periodically to know the exact burden of the disease from time to time and device appropriate strategies. To establish a trend, this type of survey needs to be repeated and it will be repeated in coming months," said Singh. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday revealed the results and analysis of the serological survey conducted in Delhi earlier this month as per which,it was found that more than 23 per cent of national capital's population has developed IgG (Immunoglobulin G) antibodies, indicating they had been exposed to the novel Coronavirus. The study indicated that a large number of infected persons remain asymptomatic. It further added that a significant proportion of the population is still vulnerable. Therefore, the containment measures need to continue with the same rigour.
