As Parliament Roof Leak Video Goes Viral, CPWD Says 'Heat From Summer, Followed By Intense Rain Eroded...'
Due to the water leakage inside the new Parliament building after heavy rains in Delhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav suggested continuing the remaining monsoon session in the old Parliament.
Central Public Works Department (CPWD) issued a statement on Thursday after opposition slammed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over water leakage in the new Parliament building, following heavy incessant rains in the national capital. It said that the issue of water leaks was addressed immediately and assured that the structural integrity and water proofing are in a good state.
Explaining the reason behind the water leakage inside the Parliament building, CPWD said: "Heat of unprecedented summer followed by very intense rain eroded silicon from a glass joint on Lok Sabha lobby skylight creating a small issue."
CPWD comes under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and is in charge of all the public sector works, including construction, development, and management of the Centre's properties.
This comes after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared a video of water seeping through the roof of the newly-constructed Parliament building, suggesting that the remainder of the monsoon session be continued in the old Parliament building.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore also shared the same video, besides submitting an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha over the "water leaks" inside the Parliament.
"Paper leakage outside, water leakage inside. The recent water leakage in the Parliament lobby used by the President highlights urgent weather resilience issues in the new building, just a year after completion. Moving Adjournment motion on this issue in Loksabha," Tagore tweeted, along with the video of the water leaks.

He filed a notice on Thursday, proposing the formation of a "specialised committee" to inspect the new Parliament building and recommend necessary repairs.
In the notice, Tagore stated that he wanted to raise the issue of "water leaks inside the Parliament lobby along the path used by our President of India when entering the new Parliament building."
