CPP Meet: Sonia Gandhi Attacks Centre Over Farmer Deaths, Demands Discussion On Border Issues

Sonia Gandhi made a demand to have a detailed discussion in parliament about the ongoing 'border issues', she also called Modi government's approach towards farmers as 'insensitive'.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed a Congress party parliamentary meeting in the central hall of the parliament on Wednesday. She targeted the central government on the issue of compensation for families of farmers who lost their lives during the year-long agitation.

She also made a demand to have a detailed discussion in parliament about the ongoing 'border issues'. The Congress president also spoke in solidarity with 12 suspended Rajya Sabha MPs.

"Let's honour the 700 farmers who sacrificed their lives (during their stir). Modi Govt is insensitive towards farmers & common people. The rise in prices of essential commodities is burning the monthly budget of every family," said Sonia Gandhi.

On border issues, Sonia Gandhi said: "We demand a full-fledged discussion in Parliament on border situation and ties with neighbours.”

She also said, "Government regret over the Nagaland incident is not enough, credible steps need to be taken to prevent recurrence of such tragedies.”

Gandhi was talking about the first incident in which six civilians were killed took place on Saturday evening when army personnel mistook coal mine workers returning home in a pick-up van to be militants belonging to the Yung Aung faction of the banned outfit NSCN(K).

12 Rajya Sabha MPs – six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Shiv Sena, and one each from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was suspended last Monday for the Winter Session of Parliament.

“It is unprecedented and unacceptable. We stand in solidarity with the suspended MPs," said Sonia Gandhi.
