New Delhi: India's Omicron tally continues to rise as the total cases surpassed the 400-mark on Saturday. The country's overall Omicron tally now stands at 415. India reported 7,189 new covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The fresh cases took the number of active cases to 77,032. The number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours was 287 with a death rate of 1.38 percent.
The recoveries recorded in the last 24 hours were 7,286 at a recovery rate of 98.4 percent. While the daily positivity rate remains less than 2 percent for the last 82 days at 0.65 percent, the concern lies in increasing Omicron cases in the country.
Considering the observation of the Health Ministry that Omicron is three times more transmissible than the Delta variant, it may lead to a surge in the number of covid cases in the country.

The worst-hit state by the Omicron variant is currently Maharashtra with 108 cases, as the state recorded 20 cases in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra is followed by Delhi with 79 cases.
The increasing number of Omicron cases is a matter of concern as most of the infected people are fully vaccinated. Although the severity is reduced in vaccinated individuals, transmissibility still remains a concern.
In order to curb the spread, many states have put restrictions on Christmas gatherings and celebrations. Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka were the first among the ones to put restrictions. Now, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have put night curfews in place to prevent a probable surge of covid cases.
India now has 415 confirmed cases of Omicron. Earlier, the health ministry had also issued an advisory for the states to keep an eye out for preventive measures to prevent covid cases surge.
