The Centre on Tuesday notified the appointment of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Mahadevan as the judges of the Supreme Court.

The Centre on Tuesday notified the appointment of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Mahadevan as the judges of the Supreme Court.

On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed the elevation of Justice Singh and Mahadevan to the apex court. Justice N Kotiswar Singh is presently serving as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," the notification by the Law Ministry read.

Justice Singh originally hails from Manipur and would be the first Supreme Court judge from that State, if his appointment is cleared by the Central government.

Justice Kotiswar Singh was born on March 1, 1963 in Manipur's Imphal. His father (Late) Justice N Ibotombi Singh served as a judge of the Gauhati High Court.

Justice Singh practiced in the Supreme Court for a short while before shifting to the Gauhati High Court. Then he served as a Senior Advocate in the high court for some time.

In 2011, Justice Singh became additional judge of the Gauhati High Court. Within a year, he was made a permanent judge. He has also served at the Manipur High Court.

Justice Mahadevan is presently the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice R. Mahadevan, Judge, Madras High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," another notification by the ministry dated July 16 read.

Justice Mahadevan completed his law degree at Madras Law College and enrolled as a lawyer in the year 1989. He was elevated as a judge of the Madras High Court in the year 2013.
