Capt Amarinder Singh’s Meeting With Union Home Minister Shah To Discuss Farm Laws Deferred

New Delhi: A meeting scheduled between former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the farm laws was deferred on Thursday.

The meeting had to be postponed as Amit Shah was scheduled to leave for Gujarat, a close source to Amarinder Singh informed PTI.

Singh was to meet the Union Home Minister Shah to discuss the possible solutions to the ongoing farmers protest against the three farm laws. On Wednesday, Singh had announced that he will be meeting Shah along with various agricultural experts.

While addressing the media, Singh said, "Tomorrow, I am going to meet Home Minister Shah and 25-30 people will go with me."

Singh further said that he had met the Union Home Minister Shah thrice in the past to discuss the ongoing farmer's protest.

Previously, Singh had said that he might consider any seat arrangement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only after there is a solution to the ongoing farmer's crisis.

In the earlier meeting, Singh urged the Union Home Minister to end the farmer's stir by scrapping the three farm laws.

Since November last year, farmers mostly from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been demanding that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, be rolled back and a new law made to guarantee minimum support price for crops.

They fear the three contentious farm laws would do away with the Minimum Support Price system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations, concerns dismissed by the union government.

Several rounds of talks between the farmers and the government have failed to break the deadlock.
