Chandy Oommen To Take Oath As Puthuppally MLA Today

Congress's Chandy Oommen, who retained the party's bastion Puthuppally with a historic margin in the September 5 bypoll, will take oath as its new MLA on Monday, filling the seat left vacant by the death of his father and party stalwart Oommen Chandy.

Results declared on Friday showed that 37-year-old Chandy Oommen trounced his main rival Jaick C Thomas of the CPI(M) by a margin of 37,719 votes in the bypoll, which saw nearly a month of vigorous campaigning by leaders of the Congress, CPI(M), and BJP for their respective parties. The Legislature Secretariat said in a statement that Chandy Oommen's swearing-in would be held on September 11.

Monsoon Session Of Nagaland Assembly To Begin Today

The monsoon session of the Nagaland assembly will be held from September 11 to 14. It will be the second session of the 14th assembly that was elected in March. The session will have three working days with recess on Wednesday.

It assumes significance because a consultative meeting of the state government with the apex tribal bodies and civil society organisations held on September 1 had decided that the government would pass resolutions against the implementation of the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Act and Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and also table the new Municipal Act.

Private Transporters’ Bandh In Bengaluru Today, Likely To Affect Commuters

Lakhs of private vehicles including autos, taxis, maxi cabs, goods vehicles and corporate buses could stay off the roads on Monday, making commuting difficult for school students and office-goers, among others, as the Federation of the Karnataka State Private Transport Associations has called for a 'bandh.'

The federation comprises a total of 32 private transport associations, and most of the private transport services are unlikely to be available starting from Sunday midnight to midnight on Monday. As private maxi cabs are one of the main modes of transport for several school children, some schools in the city have declared a holiday on Monday to avoid inconvenience to students. Those commuting to the airport would need to find alternative means as well.
