Hearing the Babri mosque demolition case of December 6, 1992, CBI Judge SK Yadav acquitted all the 32 accused saying it was spontaneous and not a planned move. The court also observed that evidences against the accused were not strong enough.
"Decision by CBI court is a black day for Indian judiciary because the SC already said in civil property dispute of the site as an egregious violation of rule of law & calculated act of destroying a public place of worship," the AIMIM president said while speaking to reporters.
"This is an issue of justice. This is an issue of ensuring that people who are responsible for Babri Masjid demolition should've been convicted. But they've been politically rewarded in the past by becoming HM & HRD minister. BJP is in power because of this issue," Owaisi added. Those acquitted in the case that lasted 28 years include former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, former Union Ministers M.M. Joshi, Uma Bharti, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, among others. The court, in its verdict, said the CBI has failed to substantiate the charges levelled against the 32 accused persons. The court also said that the video recordings submitted to the court were 'tampered with'. Senior IUML Lok Sabha member P.K. Kunhalikutty told the media: "One wonders if justice has been delivered in this case." "Even the apex court of the country had earlier said that it was an unlawful act what happened then. The CBI probe also found out what had happened then and just see what has happened when the verdict came," Kunhalikutty said. IUML supremo Panakad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal said it was most unfortunate that the Babri Masjid was demolished and those who did it have now gone scot-free and hence the CBI should go in for an appeal. As soon as the court announced the acquittal of the accused, jubilation broke out outside the court, in Ayodhya and Lucknow where supporters of the leaders were present to celebrate the occasion. Veteran BJP leader LK Advani too welcomed the court verdict by chanting 'Jai Shri Ram', and said it vindicates his personal and BJP's belief and commitment towards the 'Ram Janmabhoomi Movement'.LIVE: Barrister @asadowaisi addresses a press conference on #Babri Masjid Demolition Case judgment https://t.co/9N27oErvE7
