Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Released From Tihar Jail On Interim Bail, First Visuals Inside

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was released on interim bail after the order was received by the jail authorities.

Having spent a few months behind bars in the alleged excise policy scam, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been released from Tihar jail on Friday. Kejriwal walked out of the prison after being granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the money laundering case till June 1 as the Lok Sabha election campaign ends on that day. The court has asked AAP's chief to surrender on June 2.

Kejriwal was released after the bail order was received by the jail authorities and moved directly towards his residence.

A panel of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta stated that 21 days here or there should make no difference, and that he can surrender on June 2 when the election campaign is completed. The court also stated that it will strive to finish the hearing on Kejriwal's plea contesting the ED's arrest as soon possible.

On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate expressed its opposition to granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. They argued that giving special concessions to him would go against the principles of the rule of law and equality. Essentially, they believed that granting bail to Kejriwal could create a perception of special treatment for politicians, contrasting with the rule of law that applies to everyone equally.

Kejriwal had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the excise policy case.

The Enforcement Directorate noted that campaigning for an election is not a fundamental, constitutional, or legal right. They asserted that, to their understanding, no political leader has been granted interim bail for campaigning, even if they are not the contesting candidate.
