A 16-year-old girl, who was reportedly raped and impregnated, died after giving birth to a baby born in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The Class 10 student was reportedly sexually assaulted by a man who was known to the victim's family.
According to reports, the accused still remains at large. On Sunday, the girl after giving birth to a baby boy succumbed to severe anaemia and respiratory issues, as reported by India Today. As soon as giving birth, her health condition worsened.
She was initially taken to a local medical facility. Then she was shifted to Palamaneru Hospital and later she was transferred to a hospital in Tirupati, where she delivered a boy baby, reported Times of India. However, she still died without responding to treatment at the hospital.
The police have filed a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which aims to protect minors from such crimes. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are actively pursuing the accused.
In another case, a POCSO court in Kolkata on Monday found a man guilty of kidnapping, raping, and attempting to murder a seven-month-old girl in the northern part of the city. The verdict was delivered by the Bankshall court, and the sentencing is expected to be announced on Tuesday. The accused was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for the heinous crimes committed against the infant.
The survivor is currently receiving medical care at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a government facility, according to special public prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee. During the trial, a total of 24 witnesses, including eight specialists, were examined to build the case against the accused.
Chatterjee highlighted that the prosecution relied on evidence from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to establish the accused's involvement in the crime. Additionally, the suspect was identified through CCTV footage from the Burtolla police station area, with his distinctive gait playing a crucial role in his identification.
