The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi was targeted by new cyberattacks on Tuesday (June 6). In relation to the premier medical institution, the malware attack attempt was successfully thwarted and the threat was neutralised in time. The medical institution promptly responded to the situation, successfully foiling the attempted malware attack. The incident brought to light the ongoing challenges that institutions face in protecting their digital infrastructure from malicious cyber activity.

In a tweet, All India Institute of Medical Sciences said: "A malware attack was detected at 1450 hrs by the cyber-security systems in AIIMS, New Delhi."

"The attempt was successfully thwarted, and the threat was neutralised by the deployed cyber-security systems. The eHospital services remain to be fully secure and are functioning normally," the tweet read.

This is the second cyberattack on AIIMS Delhi in a year after the premier medical institute's services were disrupted by a cyberattack in November 2022. The attack knocked the medical institute's servers offline, and the AIIMS suspended two analysts for an alleged breach of cyber security.

The hospital's internet services were shut down for several days as the Delhi Police investigated alongside the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC). The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also went to the hospital to assist the investigating agencies.

Many services, particularly those based online, were disrupted as a result of the cyberattack. To replace the manual admission and discharge procedures, the hospital implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SoP).

Last December, it was revealed that the attack on AIIMS's computer server in Delhi was carried out by Chinese hackers, ANI reported citing a government source, who added that data from the five servers had been successfully retrieved.
