50 Doctors Succumb To Covid In Single Day, Over 200 Since Second Wave: IMA

While the IMA is trying to make all efforts to make the vaccine available for every doctor, only 66% of healthcare works have been fully vaccinated in the country.

New Delhi: On Sunday 50 doctors were reported to have died from contracting Coronavirus, so far 244 doctors who have lost their lives to Covid this year in India's second wave.

A week ago, 25-year-old Anas Mujaid passed away hours after contracting the virus.

According to Mujaid's colleagues and family members, the discharge slip issued by the hospital mentioned that Mujahid was Covid positive and suffered from “intracranial hemorrhage” which is bleeding within the skull, including the brain said an HT report.

According to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) registry, Bihar has registered the highest number of deaths of physicians at 69, which is folloed by Uttar Pradesh at 34 and the national capital Delhi at 27. Last year, over 730 doctors had died from the infection across the country, the IMA said. But the numbers have not be tracked by the government as revealed in the Parliament.

Only 3 per cent of these doctors were fully vaccinated, media reports say.

While the IMA is trying to make all efforts to make the vaccine available for every doctor, only 66% of healthcare works have been fully vaccinated in the country.

Dr. Jayesh Lele of the IMA told NDTV, "We want to highlight that doctors are understaffed and overworked. They sometimes work for 48 hours at a stretch without any rest. This adds to the viral load and they ultimately succumb to the infection. The government needs to take measures to boost the healthcare workforce", noting at about 244 have died during the second wave in April alone.
