The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi after he said during a speech in Boston that India’s Election Commission is “compromised.”
Speaking to the Indian community in the U.S., Rahul Gandhi raised doubts about how voting was done in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. He said, “It is very clear to us that the Election Commission is compromised, and it is very clear that there is something wrong with the system. I have said this multiple times,” according to ANI.

He also claimed the number of votes counted seemed too high. “More people voted in the Maharashtra Assembly elections than there are adults in Maharashtra. The Election Commission gave us a voting figure for 5.30pm, and between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, 65 lakh voters voted. This is physically impossible to happen,” he said.
Gandhi explained that it usually takes about three minutes for one person to vote. So, if so many people voted in two hours, there should have been lines until 2am. “But, this did not happen,” he added. He also said that the Election Commission refused to share video footage of the voting, and new rules now stop parties from asking for it.

Not For The First Time

This was not the first time when Rahul Gandhi has criticised and made a remark. In May, 2022 At the London ‘Ideas for India’ conference, Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP and sought to mend ties with regional parties he had earlier dismissed. Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of attacking India's soul and silencing its voice, alleging that institutions like the CBI and ED are being misused and have become parasitical, similar to the situation in Pakistan.

During an interaction with the Indian community in Malaysia in March 2018, Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Modi's 2016 demonetisation move. When asked how he would have implemented it, he said, "If I was prime minister and someone had given me a file with demonetisation written on it, I would have thrown it in the dustbin. That is how I would have rolled it out," adding, "I would have rolled it out in the dustbin, and out through the doors and into the junkyard... Because that is what I think should have been done with demonetisation.”

BJP’s Reply To Rahul Gandhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party attacked Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the Election Commission in Boston. BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said, Rahul Gandhi seems to be suffering from ECS - Entitled Child Syndrome. Insulting the nation and blaming Indian democracy to cover up his own electoral failures has become his favourite sport. 

He is addicted to venting out his political frustration on foreign soil. He barely attends Parliament, rarely raises questions, and seems more comfortable in jungle safaris. But the moment he lands abroad, especially when it comes to blaming India, he’s fully charged up.”

Gill added, “Why? Why didn’t he tell the audience in Boston about the role of the Election Commission in states like Telangana, Karnataka, and Himachal, where Congress won? Why pollute the minds of an international audience with distorted facts? On one hand, the U.S. Vice President is visiting India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the other, Rahul Gandhi is in Boston defaming India and declaring that Indian democracy is in danger. Is this just a coincidence? Rahul Gandhi must disclose which external anti-India forces are backing him and dictating his words. And finally, it’s high time Mr. Rahul Gandhi realizes that the Election Commission is not compromised — it’s his ability to win the hearts of Indian voters that is compromised beyond repair.”

BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan said, “Rahul Gandhi, who is on another 'Bharat Badnam Yatra', 'India Abuse Yatra' on foreign soil has once again, deplorably attacked India's constitutional institution and he has unsuccessfully once again tried to undermine India's democracy in a foreign country."
