The Sabarmati Report Movie Review: Vikrant Massey has established a reputation for himself, where his presence promises good content and ‘The Sabarmati Report’ is no different. As Vikrant digs into the complexities of a crucial chapter in modern Indian history, he and his castmates Riddhi Dogra and Raashi Khanna craft a gripping film that keeps viewers invested throughout.

The Sabarmati Report plot

'The Sabarmati Report' revolves around the 2002 Godhra incident in Gujarat, where a coach of the Sabarmati Express caught fire, tragically claiming the lives of 59 innocent people. Through the lens of a determined reporter, the film delves into whether it was a tragic accident or a sinister conspiracy. This investigative journey sheds light on complex truths and invites viewers to reconsider narratives they may have heard before.

How is The Sabarmati Report

The film boldly approaches the subject matter, unafraid to dive deep into the gritty realities of the incident and the media's role in uncovering the truth. It does not shy away from showing the media’s shortcomings, presenting a layered view of how journalism intersects with politics and public opinion. The film comprehensively covers all angles. As you join the reporters in their quest for truth, the film becomes an immersive experience. For those unfamiliar with this landmark case, the movie serves as an informative document. The Sabarmati Report is concise and fast-paced, with the story moving swiftly without dragging at any point - but it falls short of establishing a deep emotional resonance – a factor that would have enhanced the viewing experience.

Performances

Following his stellar role in ‘12th Fail’, Vikrant Massey is in fine form, delivering a powerful portrayal of a fresh, truth-seeking journalist. His character, a Hindi-speaking reporter determined to reveal the truth, is executed with authenticity and precision. Riddhi Dogra also shines as a seasoned journalist whose character is relatable for media insiders, bringing conviction and nuance to her role. Raashi Khanna impresses as a trainee journalist, whose transition from being an admirer of a senior journalist to a bold truth-seeker herself adds depth to the film. Each actor brings their character to life, contributing to the overall credibility and intensity of the story.

Direction and Production

Director Dheeraj Sarna does well in keeping the movie tightly bound within a two-hour runtime, successfully maintaining engagement and moving the plot forward with a focused pace. However, the film could have benefited from a stronger emotional connection, as adding more depth in this area would have made it even more impactful.

Kudos to producer Ekta Kapoor for selecting this bold subject, a choice that reflects both courage and creativity. Kapoor’s career journey, from producing soap operas to handling powerful, issue-based content like ‘The Sabarmati Report’, illustrates her versatility and willingness to explore diverse stories. She continues to bring fresh perspectives to the screen, unafraid to face criticism and ever ready to try something different.
