Winters And Sunscreen: Why You Still Need It

During winters, the Earth is located at a distance, making the danger of UV rays as great as those in summer. Know the importance of sunscreen during cold weather.

Does winter require the use of sunscreen? Absolutely! Even though sun exposure can be uncomfortable during colder months, its harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can still cause harm to your skin. This results in photoaging and speeds up premature ageing; fine lines and wrinkles are visible, but so are sunspots for some people's discolouration. Eventually, leading to premature aging. Worse still, people who don't use sunscreen in winter run the risk of skin cancer.

In winter, the ozone layer, which serves as the Earth's natural UV shield, is at its thinnest, making it more difficult for harmful radiations to penetrate the surface. Also, up to 90% of UV rays are bounced by snow and ice onto your skin, intensifying their effects. During winters, the Earth is located at a distance, making the danger of UV rays as great as those in summer. To safeguard your skin, use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to ensure 97% protection from harmful UV rays. For outdoor activities or winter sports, use water and sweat-resistant sunscreen.

Winter Sunscreen Tips:

  1. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including your lips and hands.
  2. Use sunscreen at least 20 minutes before stepping outside.
  3. Shield areas that are exposed to UV rays.
  4. Apply sunscreen every two hours or more if you're sweating excessively.
  5. Use sunscreen daily, even indoors, as UV rays penetrate through windows.
  6. Pair sunscreen with hydrating skincare products to combat winter dryness and maintain protection.
  7. Cover exposed areas with scarves, hats, or sunglasses for added protection against UV rays.
