Perched on a hillside dramatically in southern Italy, Craco is a cinematic ghost town. It was abandoned due to landslides and earthquakes. It was once a thriving medieval village with a unique location. The haunting ruins of this destination have made it a popular filming site. The town was evacuated fully in the 1980s, but you can now take guided tours here to explore the eerily empty church, stone homes, and winding streets. Craco is not just visually captivating but also steeped in mystery. It's a must-see destination for lovers of abandoned beauty.

Kolmanskop is a surreal ghost town that's half swallowed by the Namib Desert. It was a diamond mining settlement which was founded by Germans in the early 1900s. This bustling settlement was abandoned by the 1950s when richer diamond sources were discovered elsewhere. Today, san dunes seep through the once-gran mansions, hospitals, and ballroom, creating a hauntingly photogenic destination. Guided tours are available here which make Kolmanskop one of the most popular and eeriest ghost towns to visit in Africa.

3. Bodie, USA

Bodie is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the United States. With over 10,000 residents, saloons, and even a Chinatown, this destination in California boomed during the California Gold Rush. By the early 20th century, the gold dried up, and so did the population. Today, Bodie State Historic Park keeps the town in a state of "arrested decay," where furniture still sits inside dusty homes and a sense of life interrupted fills the air. It's open to public which makes it a photogenic time capsule of the Wild West.

4. Hashima Island, Japan

Known as Gunkanjima or "Battleship Island" due to its shape, Hashima once housed thousands of coal miners and their families in the 20th century. The coal industry here collapsed by 1974, and the island was left abandoned. For years, Hashima was off-limits, but now tourists can visit select areas via guided boat tours from Nagasaki. The decaying apartment blocks and eerie silence offer a dystopian vibe here. It's a real-world ruin that inspired locations in Skyfall and other post-apocalyptic stories.

5. Pripyat, Ukraine

Near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, lies Pripyat, which was evacuated in 1986 after the catastrophic reactor explosion. This location in Ukraine has been left untouched ever since and now stands as a powerful reminder of nuclear disaster. Schools, amusement parks, and hospitals lie as they were, creating an eerie landscape reclaimed by nature. Though radiation is still present, controlled tours allow visitors to explore the town with proper safety measures.

Situated in the Atacama Desert, Humberstone once used to be a thriving nitrate mining community in the 19th and early 20th centuries. But when synthetic nitrates replaced natural ones, the town declined and was eventually abandoned. Today, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's opened to tourists and offers eerie remnants of workers’ housing, machinery, and schools. This destination has a dry climate that has preserved much of the site. Walking through its ghostly avenues gives an experience of stepping into a forgotten industrial age.

7. Kayaköy, Turkey

Kayaköy was once a vibrant Greek community that was abandoned in the 1920s due to population exchange between Greece and Turkey. It remains today as a picturesque hillside dotted with roofless stone houses and crumbling churches. Located near the popular resort town of Fethiye in Turkey, Kayaköy is easily accessible and often visited by hikers and history lovers. The government has preserved the site as a historical monument and its scenic melancholy has inspired artists and writers alike.
