Independence Day 2024: Independence Day is a tribute to the brave freedom fighters who stood against colonial rule, facing immense hardships and sacrificing their lives for our nation. While some kids might find history dull, you can make it exciting by engaging them in creative crafts related to Independence Day. 

Kids love art and craft, and this is a wonderful way to spark their interest in India's history while spending quality time together. This hands-on approach not only makes learning fun but also instills a sense of pride and connection to our nation’s heritage.

Here are some decor ideas for this Independence Day celebration.

1. DIY Indian Flag

Materials: Stick, Chart Papers (Saffron, White and Green Colours), Glue, Blue Marker, Scissors

Directions: This is the simplest of them all. DIY Indian Flag is ideal for the little champs. All you need to do is cut out small and equal rectangles from the saffron, white and green chart papers and stick them together. In the middle of the white rectangle, draw ‘ashok chakra’ with a blue marker. Stick the flag to a stick and decorate your wall with it.

2. Wall Art

Materials: origami sheet, scissors, glue, pencil, eraser

Directions: To make this wall art, you can let your creativity run wild. Take the base colours of the flag and make butterflies, birds, flowers, balloons, or anything else using saffron, white, and green colours. You can create a beautiful design using paper cutting and folding techniques. 

3. Tiranga Pinwheel

Materials: Coloured paper (saffron, white, green), pin, stick, scissors.

Directions: Cut out three squares of coloured paper, one each in saffron, white, and green. The squares should be of equal size. Attach them to a stick using a pin. After this, use a ruler and pencil to draw diagonal lines from each corner. Cut along each diagonal line, stopping about 1 inch from the centre of the square. Take one corner of each triangle you've created and fold it towards the centre of the square and stick. Once all four corners are folded and glued in place, carefully push a pin through the centre of the pinwheel. Kids can decorate their pinwheels with glitter or stickers for extra flair. Once decorated, blow on it and enjoy.

4. Tiranga Paper Fans

Materials: Coloured paper (saffron, white, green), Glue, Straw

Directions: Cut three strips of coloured paper, one each in saffron, white, and green. Then, start with the saffron strip of paper. Fold the strip back and forth in an accordion style, making sure each fold is about 1 inch wide. Repeat this same step with all the other colours. Once all three strips are folded, align them together so that the edges of the folds match up. Gather the bottom edge of the accordion-folded paper and secure it with glue or a staple. Take a straw and glue it to the back of the gathered end of the fan. Once the stick is secured, gently fan out the paper from the bottom to the top. Let the kids add their personal touches to their craft for extra fun.

5. Flower Bouquet

Materials: coloured tissue papers (saffron, white, green), green pipe cleaners, scissors, glue

Directions: Take the tissue paper in the three colours of the Indian flag and cut each sheet into squares. Stack 6–8 tissue paper squares neatly on top of each other. Using scissors, cut the stacked squares into petal shapes. Once all the petals are cut, keep them stacked together. Pinch the centre of the stacked tissue paper petals and twist them together gently. Secure the twisted centre with a green pipe cleaner. Starting from the top layer, gently separate each layer of tissue paper, pulling it towards the centre to fluff up the petals. Once you have made a sufficient number of flowers, gather the pipe cleaner stems together to form a bouquet. These flowers can be decorated in a vase of your house. You can also use coloured chart paper if you’re not able to find tissues. 

6. Tiranga Wall Hanging

Materials: Coloured ribbons (saffron, white, green), Wooden hoop, glue, scissors, ruler

Directions: Begin by cutting several long strips of ribbon in saffron, white, and green. Ensure that each ribbon is of equal length for a balanced look. Next, divide the ribbons into three groups based on colour. 

Starting with the saffron ribbons, carefully attach them to the bottom half of the hoop, one by one, ensuring they are closely placed to create a full and vibrant effect. Follow with the white ribbons, then the green, filling the hoop’s rim halfway with the tricolours of the Indian flag.

For the remaining empty half of the hoop, unleash your creativity! You can continue the ribbon pattern, weave in some tricolour flowers, or add other embellishments like beads or tassels. Let your imagination run wild as you craft a unique and patriotic display.

7. Monument Quilling

Materials: Quilling tool, Chart paper (saffron, white, green), Scissors, Pencil, Glue

Directions: To create a quilled masterpiece, start by sketching an outline of a historically significant monument on paper. Once your sketch is complete, cut long, thin strips of chart paper in saffron, white, and green.

Instead of colouring in the monument, use the quilled strips to bring it to life. Begin quilling by rolling the strips into tight coils, then shape and place them carefully within the sketch. Fill in the entire monument with the tricoloured quills, creating a vibrant and textured tribute to India’s heritage. 

8. Tricolour Flower

Materials: Paints (saffron, white, green), Glue, Pencil, Cardboard, Scissors

Directions: Begin by taking plastic spoons and carefully cutting off their heads using a pair of scissors. Once you have the spoon heads separated, paint each one with the colours of the Indian flag: saffron, white, and green. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Next, take a circular piece of cardboard and arrange the painted spoon heads on it in a pattern that resembles a flower. Place the saffron-coloured spoon heads at the outer edge, followed by the white ones in the middle, and the green ones at the centre. This arrangement will create a visually appealing representation of the tricolour.

Secure each spoon head to the cardboard using glue or tape, making sure they are firmly attached and evenly spaced. To add a finishing touch, you can also paint or decorate the centre of the cardboard to enhance the overall look of your patriotic flower. Once everything is dry and set, you can display your creation as a festive decoration for Independence Day or other patriotic events.

9. CD Wind Chime

Materials: Paints, Old CDs, Strings, Beads

Directions: Cut several lengths of strings, each about 12 inches long. Use old CDs and paint them in saffron, white and green colours, to create patriotic patterns on the strings. Thread the CDs onto the strings, alternating colours in a pattern that resembles the Indian flag or other patriotic designs. Once the strings are decorated, tie each end of the strings to a wooden ring or stick to form the base of the wind chime.

Attach additional lengths of string to the ring to create a hanger for the wind chime. Make sure the strings are evenly spaced and securely tied. Hang the completed wind chime outside or in a location where it can catch the breeze. As the wind blows, the CDs will create a gentle, melodic sound, adding a patriotic touch to your space.

10. Handprint Indian Flag

Materials: White sheet, Saffron, white, blue and green paints, Paint brush

Directions: Start by placing a large sheet of white paper on a flat surface. Prepare saffron, white, and green paints. Dip one hand into the saffron paint and press it onto the top section of the paper to create the first row of handprints. Wash the paint off your hand thoroughly. Next, dip your hand into the white paint and press it onto the middle section of the paper, ensuring the handprints are evenly spaced. Wash the paint off your hand again. Finally, dip your hand into the green paint and press it onto the bottom section of the paper to complete the third row of handprints. Allow the paint to dry completely. For added detail, you can paint a small blue circle or the Ashoka Chakra in the centre of the white handprints section once the background has dried.
