How To Style Up And Accessorise Your Regular Salwar Kameez

The salwar (also spelled shalwar) kameez, commonly known as the Punjabi suit, is the traditional attire of women in northwestern India and eastern Pakistan.

The salwar (also spelled shalwar) kameez, commonly known as the Punjabi suit, is the traditional attire of women in northwestern India and eastern Pakistan. The costume consists of slacks (salwar) and a tunic (kameez), which is generally coupled with a scarf (dupatta).

"Salwaar Kameez is an attire that may be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Four factors primarily influence how a salwar kameez can be accessorised and dressed," said Himanshu Wardhan Founder of Thevasa. He further explained the primary four factors, read on to know more:

The Neckline Of The Kurta: The neckline of the Kurta is crucial in the style of a Salwar Kameez. A large neckpiece near to the neck would be a terrific solution to boost up the dress if the neck is deep.

You can also pair it with long/dressy earrings like chand ballas and wear the dupatta exactly next to the neck to complete the appearance.

If the neck is high or collared, dressy studs in the ears with slicked tied-back hair draw attention to the face, creating an assertive look.

To create a dramatic formal look, skip the earrings entirely and pile huge hefty items on top of the kurta. Chokers, of course, are an excellent choice that can be worn with any type of attire, structured or draped.

The Nature Of The Bottom: Bottoms are also undergoing a revolution today - Dogri Salwaar, Patiala Salwaar, Pakistani Salwaar, Cigarette Pants, Plazoes, and Gararas are just to name a few. If the bottom is large and flouncy, pair it with flats like juttis and sandals or block heels such as wedge kohlapuris, for example. When the bottoms get slimmer, the heels look fantastic. Try styling churidars, cigarette pants, and other bottoms with stilettos.

If you want to go for a more casual approach, pair the outfit with solid-colored sneakers. If the footwear is open to the toe, you can also add accessories such as pajebs/anklets and toe rings. These items can transform an outfit from drab to fab.

The Sleeves: Sleeves also play an important role in completing the look. Sleeveless kurtas look best with stacked bangles and possibly an armband. Full sleeves look great with rings - chunky, statement, or stacked, whichever works for you. 3/4th or short sleeves can be accessorised with almost anything, such as large statement karas, a slew of bangles, hand harnesses, or even statement cocktail rings.

The Bags: Bags play a vital role in finishing any outfit. With Salwaar Kameezes, potlis and clutches look great. Sling bags can look excellent if you want a casual creative style. You can either colour block or coordinate it with your outfit.

PRO TIPS:

Ensure that the accessories match the clothing, they should complement each other or provide a complimentary contrast. For the accessories, stick to one shiny colour, unless the clothing calls for it, distinct metallic hues rarely combine. One standout piece is more emphatic, so invest in eye-catching accessories.

Make sure that your accessories complement the look rather than compete for attention. Finally, remember that less is always more.
