The Jnanpith committee announced that the prestigious prize for the year 2023 will be awarded to renowned authors in two languages: Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and acclaimed Urdu literaturer Gulzar.

New Delhi: The 58th Jnanpith Award, a prestigious honor in the literary world, has been bestowed upon renowned Urdu poet Gulzar and Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya. The award ceremony, set to take place later this year, celebrates their significant contributions to Indian literature.

Gulzar, celebrated for his work in Hindi cinema and poetry, has previously been honored with accolades like the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. His iconic compositions, including the Oscar-winning "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire" and melodies from films like "Maachhis" and "Omkara," have left an indelible mark on the industry.

Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, the esteemed founder of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot, is not only a distinguished Hindu spiritual leader but also a prolific author with expertise in 22 languages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Awadhi, and Maithili. His extensive contributions to literature have earned him the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.

The Jnanpith selection committee, led by Jnanpith awardee Pratibha Rai, chose these two eminent personalities for their outstanding literary achievements. The award, instituted in 1944, recognises excellence in Indian literature and includes a cash prize of Rs 21 lakh, a statue of Vagdevi, and a citation.

Last year, Goan writer Damodar Mauzo was honored with the Jnanpith Award. As the literary community eagerly anticipates the upcoming award ceremony, the spotlight remains on Gulzar and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, whose literary prowess continues to shape the cultural landscape of India.
