This is why incense is lit every time Hindus conduct a pooja, no matter how big or small it is. It is believed that lighting incense sticks help in maintaining positive vibes in the household. 

Incense sticks are usually made of natural herbs, whose aroma helps remove negative forces. Lighting incense sticks during worship also help eliminate harmful pests, so it can also be considered a natural pesticide.
