The 23-year-old always wanted to have a sibling but due to some problems, her mother could not conceive again. So, when she came to know of her mother's pregnancy, she was a bit taken aback.
New Delhi: Sometimes life blesses us in unexpected ways that we can't even dream of, making us witness the impossible. This is a story of how life surprised a 23-year-old girl when she learnt that her mother was pregnant. It so happened that she always wanted to have a sibling but her mother had some problems in her uterus after she was born and could not conceive again. So, when she came to know of her mother's pregnancy, she was a bit taken aback.
The story, which has now gone viral, was shared on Instagram by Human of Bombay. The post started with, "One phone call changed my life. Last year, a few days before I was supposed to go back home for my vacation, I got a call from Appa. He seemed restless. A few minutes later, he said, ‘𝗔𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁.’ I didn’t know how to react…that’s not something you just hear your parents say at 𝟮𝟯. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. 𝗔𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝟰𝟳. And I know it’s going to sound weird but when Appa told me, Amma was already in her 8th month. In fact, when Amma herself found out, she was 7 months in…"
"You know, all throughout my childhood, I would tell Amma, ‘I want a sibling!’ But Amma says after I was born, she had some problem in her uterus because of which she would never be able to conceive again. So, life went on. Soon, I moved out for college to Bangalore while Amma & Appa remained in Kerala. Things were as is until I got that call…", Humans of Bombay further quoted her as saying.
The 23-year-old continued to narrate to Humans of Bombay the reason her father had kept the news a secret saying, "After Appa gave me the news, he said they had kept it a secret because they didn’t know how I would react. A few days later, when I reached home, I fell on Amma’s lap & started crying. I said, ‘𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱?’ I had wanted this for so long."
The 23-year-old further shared how her mother discovered her pregnancy. She told the media outlet, "After that, Amma & I began spending time together. It was then she told me how she found out–Amma & Appa had gone to a temple where suddenly, she felt dizzy & fainted. At the hospital, the doctor informed them she was 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁. For some reason, her bump wasn’t visible. Amma’s periods had stopped & she was feeling bloated, so she assumed it was menopause. And all those years back, because of what the doctor had said, pregnancy didn’t even cross her mind! I truly feel it’s a miracle!"
No matter how much progressive we call ourselves, our society still cannot accept certain realities of life. Being pregnant at such an older age brought her mother several taunts from a few family members and friends but they did not pay much attention to those making sure that the pregnancy went by smoothly.
She said, "Slowly, we began telling our family & friends. Some concerns were genuine but some were mere taunts. But we didn’t pay any attention. And that’s why Amma’s pregnancy went by smoothly; there was no stress."
In the end, she spoke about the delivery and how it changed their lives. "Just last week, Amma delivered a girl. Life has never made more sense. I can’t wait for her to call me ‘Didi!’ I mean, people find it weird that we have such a huge age gap, but does that even matter? It’s funny that for the longest time, we didn’t know she was going to come into our lives & now that she has, we can’t seem to stay away from her!" Humans of Bombay quoted her as saying.
Netizens were emotional upon seeing the post and poured their heartfelt comments. Some of them even shared their own stories. One user wrote, "My mother-in-law gave birth to my Husband at 50, by that time she already had a 26-year-old son and 25 years old daughter. My husband is a blessing and I'm proud of him. Just avoid the taunts."
Another person said, "There are so many strange things happening around when I see people enjoying that change or empowering the things which used to be taboo for our society. Makes me happy. Trans man pregnancy, Pregnancy at a senior age, Actresses having a baby early, Women choosing career over family, Choosing not to have kid, Dad quitting their jobs to manage kids etc. It’s indeed progressive and big change."
A third one commented, "This is what we call true relations.. The line " Why would I be ashamed " Tells a lot.. After all whats the point of having relations.. Having family members who don't understand you.. Don't lift you up.. You did right dear.. Tc of your momma.. Lods of love and good wishes.."
Advanced maternal-age pregnancy is the medical term for pregnancies that occur later in life. Although there is a decline in the likelihood of becoming pregnant in your 40s, it is still an option. Interestingly, the rate of advanced maternal-age pregnancy has increased in recent times.
