'Deeply Disappointing', 'Basic Work Of Students Is To Study': What Leaders Are Saying As HC Upholds Hijab Ban

The High Court dismissed the writ petition filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in college

New Delhi: After a marathon hearing for 11 days between February 10 and February 25, Karnataka High Court on Tuesday pronounced the verdict that the wearing of hijab is not an essential religious practice of the Islamic Faith.

The High Court dismissed the writ petition filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in college. Court held prescription of uniform as a reasonable restriction, according to Live Law.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice JM Khazi held that wearing of hijab is not essential...Uniforms are a reasonable restriction in schools/colleges.

Reactions to Karnataka High Court's hearing:

Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and an MP from Karnataka's Dharwad, Pralhad Joshi welcomed the court's decision.

Another BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay said that he welcomes the court's decision:

Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP for Bengaluru South, sees the hijab ban as strengthening education opportunities for girl children. 

Former CM of erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir, Omar Abdullah is disappointed with the verdict.

Karnataka health minister K Sudhakar, welcomes the court's decision.

Mehbooba Mufti calls the court's decision 'deeply dissappointing'.

BJP National General Secretary CT Ravi said, "This judgement is a direct slap on the face of CONgress and its Ecosystem."
