Festivals directly connected with upliftment of poor: PM Modi

New Delhi [India], July 30 (ANI): Highlighting the significance of Indian festivals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said festivals are not merely an occasion of joy but also bring economic opportunities for the poor.

Addressing the 34th edition of the monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the festivals in India are directly associated with the financial conditions of the poorest of the poor.

"Our festivals are directly connected with the upliftment of the poor. It drives their economic activities. Our festivals also bring economic opportunities for the poor," he said.

He further said that festivals 'light the lamp of prosperity in the homes of the poor and called on the nation to help those in need.

"Indian festivals and its celebrations are not merely occasions of joy and merriment but they are in themselves a campaign of social reform. Our all the festival are also linked with the economic welfare of the poor," he added.

The Prime Minister said the poor get an opportunity to earn an income during Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, Ganesh Utsav, Chauth Chandra, Durga Pooja and Diwali and this adds a spontaneous joy to the festivities.

Asserting that it is time to link festivities with the economic welfare of the poor, he urged the people to use 'diyas' instead of lights to benefit poor.(ANI)
