Varun Dhawan’s foray into mass action with Baby John did not unfold as he had hoped. The film turned out to be a massive box-office failure, falling far short of recovering its costs. While Varun has remained silent about the debacle, his co-star Rajpal Yadav has shared his perspective, even revealing Varun's reaction to the film's performance.
Rajpal Yadav on Baby John's box-office collection
In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Rajpal Yadav described Baby John as a "well-made film in every way" but admitted its fate was affected by being a remake of the Tamil film Theri.
Rajpal explained: “If this wasn’t a remake, then this would have been the most well-made film of my 25-year career. But since Vijay had done it, the audience had already seen it, and because it was a remake, it affected the box office of the film.”
Directed by Kalees and produced by Atlee, Baby John was a remake of Atlee's Tamil film Theri, starring Vijay in the lead role. The film, featuring Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Jackie Shroff alongside Varun, managed to earn less than ₹50 crore at the domestic box office, despite having a budget exceeding ₹180 crore.

On Varun Dhawan’s reaction to the failure
When asked if Varun was "depressed" about the film’s underperformance, Rajpal denied it, saying: “Varun is such a sweet boy, very hardworking. He has always tried to do something different, and his attempts must be appreciated because it’s a big deal to take risks.”
Rajpal Yadav’s role in Baby John
In the film, Rajpal Yadav portrayed Constable Ram Sevak, the deputy to Varun’s character, DCP Satya Verma. While Baby John was criticised by many, Rajpal earned praise for his performance, especially for a scene in which he attempted action for the first time in his career.
