Vir Das' 'Two Indias' Monologue Controversy: Kangana Demands Strict Action Against Comedian. Taapsee, Richa Extend Support On Social Media

Bollywood celebrities are divided over Vir Das' 'Two Indias' monologue in which he addressed the issues that are ailing the country.

New Delhi: Popular comedian Vir Das has sparked controversy after a clip from his 'I come from Two Indias' monologue went viral on social media. The 'Delhi Belly' star had uploaded the video on his official YouTube handle from his recent performance at Washington DC's John F Kennedy Center. In his six-minute-long clip, Das took a dig at several issues that are ailing India. From gang rapes to India’s fight against COVID-19, the comedian spoke about the ‘Two Indias’ he comes from.

How Bollywood REACTED To Vir Das’ Monologue?

Several tinsel town celebs including Taapsee Pannu, Hansal Mehta and Richa Chaddha lauded Das for his 'courage'. However, many stars also slammed him for ‘tarnishing the image’ of India in a foreign land.

Taapsee, who is basking in the success of 'Rashmi Rocket', said that she is elated to see Vir reach a 'respectable stage'.

"Because I come from the India which not only swells with pride and happiness to see a fellow countrymen reach that respectable stage but I also come from the India who believes we shall get through this time too," the 'Thappad' actress wrote. She used the hashtag 'Forever Proud' while sharing the note.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta tweeted, "I was very moved by this @thevirdas. I come from an India where it needs courage for a Vir Das to say this, I come from an India where many of us admire this courage, yet choose to remain silent."

Pooja Bhatt retweeted Hansal's post and wrote, "You said it Hansal.I was not amused as much as I was moved-more by the audience that cheered with their heart for the India that chooses love over hate & shows great dignity & decency in the face of suffering & despair. One that can unashamedly cry for itself yet laugh at itself."

Kangana Ranaut Lashes Out At Vir Das, Demands Strict Action

The 'Thalaivii' actress, who created a huge furore with her remark on 'India's independence' in 1947, slammed Vir for generalise Indian men. She shared a post on her Instagram story that read, "When you generalise all Indian men as gang-rapists it gives rise and encouragement to racism and bullying against Indians all over the world...after Bengal Famine Churchill famously said, 'These Indians breed like rabbits they are bound to die like this...' he blamed Indians' sex drive/fertility for the death of millions because of hunger... Such creative work targeting an entire race is soft terrorism... strict actions must be taken against such criminals @virdas."

Kangana said Vir's act gave encouragement to racism against Indians and strict action must be taken against the comedian.

Vir Das Issues Statement After Facing Flak

The comedian released a statement after several politicians and netizens expressed their displeasure over his viral clip. Das said that his intention was to remind everyone that India, despite the issues, is 'great'.

"The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India's that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret. The video appeals for us to never forget that we are great. To never stop focusing on what makes us great," he said in a statement.
