On Tuesday, lyricist Swanand Kirkire shared the news of theatre actor Alok Chatterjee's passing. He posted a photo of Alok on Instagram along with a heartfelt message. Alok was a batchmate of the late actor Irrfan Khan at the National School of Drama (NSD).

Swanand's caption, in both Hindi and English, read: "Alok Chatterjee.. ek nayaab abhineta chala gaya! Woh NSD mein Irrfan ke batchmate the (Alok Chatterjee... A unique actor is gone! He was Irfan's batchmate in NSD)."

About Alok
According to a report by Money Control, Alok passed away around 11 pm on Monday due to multiple organ failure. He was 64 years old, as confirmed by India Today. His last rites are scheduled for later on Tuesday.
Alok and Irrfan were classmates at NSD from 1984 to 1987, and both played leading roles in numerous plays during that period. Alok was a gold medalist at NSD and was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contributions to Indian theatre. He also served as the former director of the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama.
Alok directed plays such as William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, in which he also performed. He later taught at NSD and FTII.
In an interview from the past, as quoted by Money Control, Alok shared, "I had gone to Delhi to become a performer. Had I wanted to do films, I would have gone to FTII Pune. I am living my life for theatre. I have studied at NSD, which is why theatre is in my blood. I am not a painter sold in the market."
