UP Election 2022: SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav Files Nomination From Homeground Karhal Seat
This is for the first time that the SP President and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister will contest the Assembly election. He is currently an MP in the Lok Sabha from Azamgarh constituency.
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav reached the Collectorate Officer today and filed his nomination from homeground Karhal constituency in Mainpuri for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. Other SP candidates also filed their candidature along with Akhilesh Yadav. Ramgopal Yadav, Tejpratap Yadav and Sohran Singh Yadav(Ex-MLA) were with Akhilesh during nomination
This is for the first time that the SP President and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav will contest the Assembly election. He is currently a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Azamgarh constituency.
Registering victory for seven times, Karhal seat is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party since the year 1993. Only once in 2002, the SP lost this seat to BJP. Sobaran Singh Yadav from SP is the current MLA from the Karhal seat.
Akhilesh Yadav reached his hometown of Saifai from where he reached the Collectorate Office to file his nomination.
"Akhilesh Yadav will reach the Collectorate on January 31 and file his nomination papers. Preparations are almost done to file nominations of other three SP candidates with him," Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary had told news agency ANI.

Akhilesh Yadav's contender and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath will also be contesting the assembly polls for the first time this year. Adityanath is fielded from the Gorakhpur Urban seat by the BJP. Both Yadav and Adityanath had chosen the Legislative Council route to become member of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly when they became Chief Ministers.
The BJP has not announced its candidate from the Karhal seat yet.
Voting for the Mainpuri seat will be held in the third phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly election on February 20. Samajwadi Party patriarch and Akhilesh Yadav’s father, Mulayam Singh is a sitting MP in Lok Sabha from Mainpuri seat.
For the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections, the SP has forged an alliance with the Jayant Chuadhary led Rashtriya Lok Dal.
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will commence from February 10 in seven phases. Counting of votes will take place on March 10.
