Punjab Election 2022: Did Congress Just Hint At Channi As CM Face? See Video

After Captain Amarinder Singh was replaced as CM by the Congress high command, there has been an intense tussle over the top post between Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Channi.

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday tweeted a video hinting that it might pitch Charanjit Singh Channi as the chief ministerial face in the upcoming Punjab Assembly election. The video also features Bollywood actor Sonu Sood.

The development comes on a day AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal said the party would announce its chief ministerial candidate on Tuesday.

So far, Congress has been circumspect in announcing its chief ministerial candidate amid factionalism in its Punjab unit.

After Captain Amarinder Singh was replaced as CM by the Congress high command, there has been an intense tussle over the top post between Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Channi.

To avoid a further rift within its ranks, Congress has repeatedly asserted that it would contest the polls under a collective leadership of Sidhu, Chief Minister Channi and campaign committee chief Sunil Jakhar.

The Opposition has targetted Congress, saying it had many chief ministerial aspirants.

Last week, Channi said the Congress should declare its chief ministerial candidate for the February 14 assembly polls.

"Last time when they had declared Captain (as CM’s face) we won and previous time the (CM) candidate was not declared we lost and before that when they gave (CM candidate) we won and when they did not declare candidate we lost," PTI quoted Channi as saying.

When asked if the Congress should declare him as the chief ministerial candidate, Channi said, "I have never thought about such things. Last time when Partap Singh Bajwa was the state unit chief, I was standing with him against Captain (Amarinder Singh)."

"But going by the voice of people at that time, I told Rahul Gandhi that Capt should be declared candidate and he should be made CM as people are in his favour. They (party) conducted a survey and people wanted him (Amarinder). This time whom people like they will tell and party will go by that," he further said.

The Chief Minister also said that he loves the people of Punjab and they too love him.

On the other hand, Navjot Singh Sidhu has said that the people would choose the next chief minister of the state and not the Congress high command.

"The people of Punjab will make the CM. Who told you that the high command will make the CM?" he had said last week.
