New Delhi: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has selected Rekha Patra as its candidate from Basirhat constituency. Patra is a victim of the Sandeshkhali incident. As per IANS, Rekha Patra was the first to file a case in the Sandeshkhali incident. Rekha's name featured in the fifth list of 111 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, released on Sunday.

In BJP's fifth list other prominent names are actor Kangana Ranaut and industrialist Naveen Jindal, who joined the party today. Arun Govil, renowned for his portrayal of Ram in the TV serial Ramayan, has been fielded from the Meerut Lok Sabha seat.
BJP's IT cell head, Amit Malviya took a shared on X, "The BJP has fielded Rekha Patra from Basirhat in Bengal."

Notably, Trinamool supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to field incumbent Haroa MLA Haji Nurul Islam from the Basirhat seat that covers the Sandeshkhali region.
Sandeshkhali violence made the headlines, when, Women in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali have been protesting over alleged incidents of atrocities committed against them by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and his aides. It has been alleged that women were sexually assaulted in Sandeshkhali at gun points.
The Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal will be held from April 9 to June 1 in all seven phases. The counting will take place on June 4.
