IMD Forecasts Normal Weather For Phase 2 Lok Sabha Polls, EC Holds Meet To Assess Heat Wave Challenge

New Delhi: The Election Commission has received confirmation from the director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that there are no major concerns regarding heat waves for the upcoming Phase 2 of the Lok Sabha elections, slated for 26 April. Weather forecasts indicate normal conditions for the 13 states and Union territories set to participate in Phase 2.

In response to reports of above-average temperatures and potential heat waves in certain regions during the election, the EC had convened a meeting with relevant agencies to assess the evolving weather situation and strategise measures to mitigate risks. 

Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, the meeting included officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the National Disaster Management Authority, and the IMD.

Decisions Taken At The Meet

1-A task force comprising officials from ECI, IMD, NDMA and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare will review the impact of heat wave and humidity five days before each polling phase for any concerning developments and mitigatory measures, if necessary.

2-EC has directed the health ministry to issue instructions to health authorities in states to prepare for and extend assistance in case of heat wave conditions affecting election operations.

3-The commission will hold a separate a review with state chief electoral officers (CEOs) to ensure adequate arrangements at polling stations, including shamiyana, drinking water, fans, and other assured minimum facilities, as per its existing advisory dated March 16, 2024.

4-IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities shall be carried out amongst the public for precautionary measures (Do’s & Don’ts) to mitigate the heat wave impact in polling station areas.

The commission has been monitoring weather updates, prioritising the comfort and safety of voters, polling personnel, security forces, as well as candidates and political party leaders. It had issued a directive on 16 March to all CEOs on the 'Prevention of Heat Wave Impact'.

In tandem with the Election Commission's efforts, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the NDMA had earlier issued guidelines aimed at mitigating the risks associated with heat-wave-related issues.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has directed all states to develop a comprehensive action plan as part of their public health advisory, emphasising proactive measures to address heat-related challenges.
