Karnataka: Yeddy quits, Kumaraswamy to take oath as Chief Minister on May 23

The three-day-old BJP government in Karnataka collapsed on Saturday, minutes before the scheduled trust vote, with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa resigning in a tame anticlimax to what promised to be on the edge of seat political thriller.

Bengaluru (Karnataka): Minutes before the crucial floor test, BS Yeddyurappa resigned as chief minister of Karnataka. He stepped down as the BJP could not muster the requisite numbers to prove majority in the floor of the House. In his 'emotional' speech, he said BJP was given the mandate as it rose from 40 to 104 seats. "The Congress was rejected by the people. Both Congress and JDS attacked each other fiercely during election campaigns but now want to form government together." "I will continue to serve the people of Karnataka till my last breath," he said before stepping down as chief minister for two days. JDS leader Kumaraswamy will now become the next chief minister. All That Happened On Saturday:
  • Swearing-in ceremony of JDS-Congress government in Karnataka will be on May 23 instead of May 21

The Supreme Court on Friday directed a floor test in the Karnataka Assembly today at 4pm, overruling the 15-day window granted by governor Vajubhai Vala that the Opposition feared would facilitate "horse-trading" by the state's minority BJP government. Yeddyurappa's counsel Mukul Rohatgi had handed the court two letters that his client had written to Vala on May 15 and 16 claiming the support of his party's 104 MLAs and "others". On Friday evening, the Congress released an undated audio clip and alleged that it featured the voice of a mining baron who had made a pitch to lure an MLA. "You will be 100 times richer," the voice tells Raichur MLA-elect Basavanagouda Daddal. "The big people, the national president, will sit and talk with you. Let's talk about whatever you want. After that we'll take the next step."
