Background

Jorhat: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won the elections by a margin of 102420 votes. The polling / voting in Jorhat constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 1 on 11 April. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Tapan Gogai and Congress Party#s Sushanta borgohain

Jorhat 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 7 out of the 14 parliamentary seat with 36.5 percent vote share while the All India United Democratic Front managed to win just 3 seats with a 14.8 percent vote share.

The total voter turnout was 75.45% Lok Sabha percent with 76.29% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes.   • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate by a margin of 99360 votes INC candidate Bijoy Krishna Handique had got 304690 while BJP got Janaki Nath Handique votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Asom Gana Parishad candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Bijoy Krishna Handique attained 216406 votes and AGP's Deba Kumar Bora bagged 54397 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated Asom Gana Parishad candidate with a difference of 47239 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Bijoy Krishna Handique attained 311578 votes and Asom Gana Parishad candidate Bhadreswar Buragohain bagged 264339 votes
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Asom Gana Parishad candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Bijoy Krishna Handuqui attained 239369 votes and AGP's Paragehar Chaliha bagged 128706 votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated BLD candidate with a difference of 28687 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Tarun Gogoi attained 148902 votes and BLD candidate Dulal Chandra Barua bagged 120215 votes
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated RCI candidate by a margin of 71010 votes INC candidate Tarun Gogoi had got 102820 while RCI got Khogen Bar Baruah votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated PSP candidate with a difference of 44778 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader R. Barua attained 92519 votes and PSP candidate M. C. Barua bagged 47741 votes
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between PSP and INC; here PSP candidate defeated his INC counterpart with a difference of 907 votes.
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 46315 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Ahmed Mofida attained 80028 votes and CPI candidate Syed Abdul (Malik) bagged 33713 votes
  • 1951 Lok Sabha Elections: In India's Very First Lok Sabha Polls, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated SP candidate by a margin of 50675 votes INC candidate Debeswar Sarma had got 93002 while SP got Bhabesh Chandra Barua votes.
