Cyclone ‘Michaung’: Schools Closed In Tamil Nadu's Chennai, 3 Districts Tomorrow

Tamil Nadu has declared a school holiday on December 4 in four districts of the state including Chennai, in the wake of cyclone 'Michaung.'

In the wake of the cyclone ‘Michaung,’ the Tamil Nadu government has declared a School holiday on December 4, in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. The Tamil Nadu government directed the closure of schools in four districts through an official order on Sunday. In its order, the Tamil Nadu government has declared December 4 as a public holiday in the said districts, and directed the closure of all government offices in these districts, besides closure of schools.

Due to this cyclonic storm, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts are likely to experience very heavy rainfall and strong winds. In view of the above, the government has decided to declare a public holiday on 04.12.2023 (Monday) under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, as a special case,” reads the official order.

“All government offices including the offices of Public Undertakings/ Corporations, Boards, Banks, Financial institutions, etc., in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu Districts will be closed on 04.12.2023 (Monday),” the order adds.

Notably, the move by the Tamil nadu government comes in the wake of heavy rainfall predictions in these four districts on December 4 by the meteorological department. As per the update by the Indian Meteorological department on Saturday, hinted that the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to escalate into a deep depression within the next 12 hours. Further IMD forecasts indicate that the depression is likely to progress into a cyclonic storm by December 3.

The Meteorological Centre, Chennai also suggested thunderstorms, lightning, along with light to moderate rain in isolated areas in several districts of Tamil Nadu including Villupuram, Ranipet, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Thiruppur, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar, Nilgiris, and Theni, as well as in Puducherry & Karaikal.

Considering the rainfall and thunderstorm alert, earlier today, the closure of schools in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Yanam regions on December 4, 2023, was also announced. Notably, as per the latest IMD alert, the 'Cylone Michaung' is approaching the Andhra Pradesh and neighboring North Tamil Nadu coasts within the next 12 hours. In the wake of the cylone’s landfall, PM Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to take stock of the necessary preparations, and assured him all possible assistance.
