Andhra Pradesh: Four Students Drown In Godavari River While Swimming

The four students went to swim into the Godavari river and were swept away by the strong currents of the river, as per the police.

Four students have drowned in the Gautami-Godavari river in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. The students went to take a dip in the river when the incident happened, and their bodies were recovered on Sunday, as per the police. Sevetudents went to the Pillanka village in Tallarevu mandal around 4.30 pm on Saturday, to swim into the Godavari river. Among the students who ventured into the river, four of them drowned and their bodies were retrieved on Sunday morning, a police official told PTI. The other three students are safe, as per the police. 

All four deceased students were in their 20s, and were pursuing undergraduate courses. The students belonged from the Tanuku town in the West Godavari district, and were on a fun trip. They reached Pilanka after visiting Yanam. The four students who drowned were swept away by strong currents while swimming, and their bodies were recovered after several hours, as per the police. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire, revenue and police departments, and fishermen were involved in the search effort to retrieve the bodies of the deceased students. Police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC.

Notably, in a similar incident, five students of a private students drowned in Nallakathu river at Valparai, in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. All five students were final-year students in a private college in Coimbatore, as per a Times of India report. The students who were on a vacation to Valparai, intended to take a dip into the Nallakathu river. However, the students who did not know swimming were swept away by the strong currents of the river. The friends along with some locals informed the fire and rescue services personnel and the Valparai police.
