Delhi Water Crisis: Amid Protests, Arvind Kejriwal Appeals To BJP Govts In UP, Haryana For Help

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the BJP governments in UP and Haryana for assistance amid the water crisis. He said Delhi is facing a water crisis due to reduced supply.

To meet Delhi's water demands amid the ongoing crisis during the scorching heat, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday appealed to BJP governments in UP and Haryana for help. Through a post on social media, Kejriwal urged the BJP to “shun politics” and “come together” to provide relief to the people of Delhi.

Addressing the increased demand for water amid the abnormally high temperatures, Arvind Kejriwal on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “In this scorching heat, the water demand has increased a lot. The water that Delhi used to get from the neighbouring states has also been reduced. That means the demand has increased but the supply has reduced. We all have to solve this together.” He appealed to the BJP and wrote, “I request everyone with folded hands that instead of doing politics at this time, let us come together and provide relief to the people of Delhi.”

Kejriwal in the post asked the BJP to cooperate with the AAP government in Delhi. He asked the BJP to talk to its governments in Haryana and UP and help Delhi get some water for a month.

Meanwhile, to deal with water scarcity, the Delhi government on Thursday directed the Delhi Jal Board to take strict action against the people who overuse water. The violators have to pay a fine of Rs 2000.

In response to the fine imposed, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva claimed it to be “a way of doing corruption”. "They are encouraging tanker mafias... Every MLA of Arvind Kejriwal along with tanker mafias are selling water to the people of Delhi and looting them," he added. Sachdeva also blamed Kejriwal’s “mismanagement” for the water crisis.

Delhi BJP workers on Friday staged protests near the Aam Aadmi Party office over the water shortage in Delhi. The women's wing of the BJP protested against the AAP government on Thursday with empty pitchers.

Moreover, the Delhi Government on Friday approached the Supreme Court regarding the water crisis, reported ANI. Delhi has filed a petition seeking additional water to the country’s capital from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh for a month. The petition read, “It is everyone's responsibility to fulfil the needs of the country's capital.”

Water Minister Atishi earlier on May 29 had warned of the Delhi government moving to the Supreme Court against Haryana on the matter. She had accused the Haryana government of not releasing the capital city's water share.
