The incident followed days after the windshield and a few windows of an HRTC bus were destroyed by two unknown persons in the Kharar area of Mohali, Punjab.
These incidents unfolded shortly after tensions arose when some locals in Himachal Pradesh removed flags featuring the image of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from the bikes of a group of youths from Punjab.
In response, activists from Dal Khalsa and Sikh Youth of Punjab expressed their protest by pasting Bhindranwale's image on HRTC buses and several private vehicles in Hoshiarpur.
Incident Raised In Assembly
Opposition leader Jairam Thakur raised the matter in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly after the incident and uproar. In response, CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that he had a conversation with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann over the phone upon the incident, according to a report by Jagran.
He confirmed that Mann had assured him to take stringent action against the accused. Sukhu further added that he had a conversation about issuing instructions regarding this at the DGP level. The Chief Minister concluded that, earlier we were also a part of Maha Punjab, and people coming from this state are our brothers. He added that the young generation goes astray on several occasions, and when the young generation goes off target then such disputes take place.
On Wednesday, bus service on at least 10 routes in Punjab was also suspended after two of its buses were damaged by miscreants in two days.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, also holding the Transport portfolio, stated in the House that the government was in touch with the Punjab government and administration after the incident. “The state government has deployed corporation officials at all important bus stands in Punjab to monitor the situation,” he said, IANS reported.
“An FIR (first information report) has been registered at the police station in Kharar and the Senior Superintendent of Police of Mohali has said that security will be provided to our buses,” he said.
