Meet Bihar's 'Water Warrior' Bhullu Sahni: A Visually Impaired Swimmer Who Has Saved 13 Lives

A resident of Dumduma village in Samastipur district, Bhullu Shani has earned the name of the ‘Water Warrior’ due to his fearlessness and astonishing swimming skills that has saved 13 people's lives.

Bhullu Sahni of Bihar’s Samastipur district has proved that physical disabilities cannot limit one's spirit and skills. This unsung hero has become an inspiration by saving 13 lives and recovering more than 14 bodies from water, despite being visually impaired since childhood.

A resident of Dumduma village in Samastipur district, Shani has earned the name of the ‘Water Warrior’ due to his fearlessness and astonishing swimming skills.

He is famous in his  village and district and has now made it to the headlines as well. Sahni is said to have a unique and effective style of swimming, which makes people in the district remember him for help whenever there is an accident in water. The people of Samastipur regard him as a true hero. Bhullu Sahni says, “What’s the problem if I cannot see, my skill is no less than a warrior."

The swimmer has proven that if someone possesses confidence and skill, even his physical limitations cannot stop him from attaining success. His achievements have demostrated that a person can easily overcome any difficulty if he has the courage to face it and work hard.

Speaking to Local18, Bhullu Sahni, son of Kailu Sahni, said that he lives near the river and pond and that he belongs to the Mallah caste. He shared he has been an expert swimmer since childhood, and further honed his skills when he went fishing with his father.

"I cannot see, but I have a special ability inside the water. When I get into the water, I can clearly see a dead body or a living person, and I take them out safely," he said.

Sahni further told Local 18 that he has had opportunity to save several lives and has even retrieved many bodies from the water. When he retrieves a body, the family of the deceased or the Panchayat head give him financial assistance.

His unique ability and courage have earned him a distinct identity in the district.
