Avalanche Near ITBP Camp In Himachal's Lahaul-Spiti, No Loss Of Life

ITBP personnel narrowly escaped an avalanche in Lahaul-Spiti, which stopped just 200 feet from their camp.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel on Sunday narrowly escaped a major accident in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul-Spiti as a high-speed avalanche stopped just 200 feet away from the ITBP camp. As per the details, there was no loss of life.

Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar, Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, said, "The soldiers of the ITBP camp, located in the Gyu area of Kaja Mandal, were working to remove snow from the road. Meanwhile, suddenly heavy snow started sliding from the mountains. The speed of the avalanche was very fast, but fortunately it stopped just 200 feet before the camp."

As of now, the weather is clear, but the danger of avalanche still persists in the hilly areas. The administration has appealed to the people to avoid going to sensitive areas.

The post of the 17th Battalion of ITBP is located in Gyu, where about 20 soldiers are deployed. This post is one km from Gyu village and just five km from the China border.

Glacier sliding incidents are common during winter in Lahaul-Spiti, but in the last three years, due to less snowfall, the incidents of avalanches had reduced. However, this time there was heavy snowfall from February 25 to March 1, due to which the risk of avalanche has increased again. The Meteorological Department has issued a snowfall and rain alert for Himachal Pradesh today.
