Gurugram Floods: One Hour Of Rain Transforms Gurugram Into 'Venice' | WATCH
Monsoon rains paralysed Gurgaon, India, flooding streets and causing severe traffic. Poor drainage, unchecked construction obstructing natural water flows, and flawed urban planning are to be blamed.

The monsoon rains have completely thrown normal life out of gear in the National Capital Region. With sudden and long spells of rain, the streets are flooded, traffic is moving at a snail's pace, and tempers are running high. People are venting their anger and frustration on social media as images of Gurgaon's flooded streets are going viral.

Gurgaon, which is regarded as one of India's top corporate hubs, is plagued by poor drainage and waterlogged streets every monsoon. A few hours of rain render the streets unpassable. A stretch of road that would usually take 5-10 minutes reportedly took hours to cross — thanks to extreme waterlogging.

The problem is not limited to mere waterlogging. Lack of proper drainage poses a threat to lives as roads are caving in.

Why Does Waterlogging Occur In Gurgaon?
Waterlogging is nothing new in Gurgaon. Despite the high-rises, swanky malls, and expensive real estate, Gurgaon seems to have failed in tackling its waterlogging problem. The frequent snarls remind one of the 2016 mega gridlock that had people stranded on the roads for nearly a day.
But why is waterlogging an everlasting problem?

The primary reason is the lack of a proper drainage system. There is no proper channel that can divert rainwater away from the city's streets. Also, the natural water channels have also been filled up due to rampant construction and encroachment, which have gone unchecked so far. Moreover, the region skirts the Aravalli Hills, which is why water accumulation is a possibility.
Lack of proper urban planning with a localised focus and flawed slopes of roads compound the problem. Nearly Rs 450 crore has been spent on drain construction and clean-up in almost a decade. However, the problem persists.
