Massive Fire Erupts At Surat Textile Market, 2nd Time In Less Than 24 Hours

A massive fire engulfed a four-storey textile market in Surat, Gujarat, on Wednesday morning.

A massive fire broke out in a four-storey textile market in Gujarat's Surat on Wednesday morning, an official said, as reported by news agency PTI.

As per the details, efforts to douse the flames are underway and several of more than 800 shops located in the building were damaged though no casualty has been reported so far, a fire department official said.

Chief Fire Officer Basant Kumar Parikh said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "The temperature is extremely high inside because there was a lot of material kept there. We got the first call yesterday at around 8 AM. We are not sure about the stability of the structure of the building. We are using a hydraulic platform and trying to douse the fire from outside. Almost 50% of the stores have caught fire."

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, a fire also broke out in the building's basement where textile stock was stored. While the fire was brought under control after a few hours, one worker due to asphyxiation.

The exact cause of the fire was being ascertained, however, prima facie it appears to have started on the top floor due to a short circuit.
