Fire Breaks Out At GMCH Orthopaedics Wing In Guwahati
On July 8th, a fire erupted in GMCH's Orthopaedics department due to an overheated wire panel, but was quickly contained. No casualties were reported, and authorities are investigating the cause.

A fire broke out on Tuesday, July 8, at the Orthopaedics department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), sparking panic among patients and staff. Fortunately, swift action by hospital authorities and fire personnel helped contain the blaze before it could spread further.
According to the GMCH Principal, the fire originated from a heated wire panel situated beneath a staircase in the Orthopaedics section, reported local news website GPlus. "The fire was caused by the overheating of the wire panel under a staircase in the orthopaedics section. As papers were stacked near that, it caught fire. Not much damage was caused as our officials were quick to respond. Now the fire department is looking after it," he told reporters, assuring that the situation was promptly brought under control," he was quoted as saying.
Fire and emergency services responded immediately to the alert. Crews acted swiftly to douse the flames and began inspecting the site for any additional risks. A fire department official told GPlus, "The fire is under control and the team is looking for other vulnerabilities. No casualty was reported."
While the fire was quickly contained, the incident has prompted further investigation. Authorities are currently assessing the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. As of now, no injuries have been reported, but officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Tuesday's fire comes barely a month after a fire in the Gandhi Basti area of Guwahati reduced more than 30 homes to ashes, leaving several families without shelter.
The fire, which erupted around 11 AM near Anu Baruah Path, quickly engulfed rows of closely packed houses, sending thick columns of black smoke into the sky. The choking fumes blanketed the neighbourhood, triggering chaos as residents scrambled for safety.
According to local media, the fire is believed to have originated in the compound of Munna Newar, who had rented out a cluster of small one- and two-room houses. Within minutes, nearly 20 of these structures were completely destroyed.
The situation worsened when at least eight LPG cylinders exploded in quick succession, intensifying the blaze and spreading the flames to adjoining homes. A separate row of about 10 rented houses owned by Aminur Rahman was also caught in the inferno, most of which were reduced to rubble.
