UP Registers Over One-Third Dolphin Population Of The Country, India Stands At 6,327

UP's strong environmental focus and declaration of the Ganges dolphin as the state aquatic animal have contributed to these results.

Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest 2,397 dolphins in the country, according to first ever comprehensive riverine dolphin report that Prime Minister Narendra Modi released on Monday.

The report, which was released by PM Modi at the 7th meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) at Gir National Park, also stated that Indian rivers are home to 6,327 dolphins.

"This pioneering effort involved surveying 28 rivers across eight states, with 3,150 man-days dedicated to covering over 8,500 km", the release said. UP is closely followed by Bihar (2,220), West Bengal (815), and Assam (635).

PM Modi emphasised the importance of awareness on dolphin conservation with the involvement of the local population and villagers in the areas. He also advised organising exposure visits for school children in dolphin habitat areas.

What UP CM said?

The Yogi government’s strong focus on conserving forests, the environment, and aquatic wildlife has significantly contributed to these results. On October 17, 2023, the Yogi government had declared the Ganga dolphin as the state aquatic animal.

In a post on X, UP CM Yogi said, "According to the river dolphin estimation report released for the first time in the country by the respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, there are a total of 6,327 river dolphins in India, out of which the maximum 2,397 river dolphins have been found in Uttar Pradesh."

He added, "This achievement, which gives the message of love for all living beings, is the result of the unwavering commitment and continuous efforts of @UPGovt towards the conservation and promotion of aquatic animals and cleanliness of rivers in accordance with the wishes of the Prime Minister. Hearty congratulations to the people of the state and nature lovers!"
