Missing DU Student’s Body Found In Yamuna River Near Geeta Colony

19-year-old DU student Sneha Debnath, missing since July 7, found dead in Yamuna. A suicide note pointed to family issues, not academic stress.

In a tragic incident, the body of Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old Delhi University student from Tripura, was recovered from the Yamuna River near Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday. Sneha had gone missing on July 7 after leaving her residence, sparking an intense search by her worried family. Their worst fears were confirmed when they identified her body.

As per police reports, Sneha had left behind a note indicating her intent to end her life. Investigators confirmed that she had travelled to North Delhi’s Signature Bridge, the location where she was last seen before the unfortunate incident.

Last Journey Traced To Signature Bridge

During the investigation when police tracked Sneha's movement using technical surveillance, they confirmed that her last known location was Signature Bridge in North Delhi. A cab driver who dropped her there shared, "I picked up the student from Paryavaran Complex, South Ex, and dropped her at Signature Bridge. I dropped the student using Uber car service. I picked her up at 5:15 PM and dropped her at the marked location 39 minutes later. The girl paid me ₹ 523 online."

He added, "After getting into the cab, the student seemed completely normal. She asked me to connect Bluetooth, but I refused and asked her to listen to songs on YouTube. About 10 minutes after sitting in the cab, she spoke on a call for 1–2 minutes and then started chatting. After that, she sat quietly. Five minutes before the drop, she received a call. As soon as I dropped her, she walked behind."

Suicide Note Mentions Family Stress, Not Academic Pressure

Police stated that Sneha had left behind a letter indicating her intent to take her own life. Contrary to the speculation, the note did not mention any academic struggles. Instead, it pointed to family-related issues.

Sneha’s neighbour, Paras Chhikara, recounted his interaction with her on the day she went missing.

"On the 7th, I reached home after finishing my duty at around 5:30 am. She lives in my neighbourhood, and at that time, she left her house and got into my car by mistake. She thought the cab she had booked was mine. Her mother clicked a picture of my car's number plate. I told her that this is not your car, after which she got into another car, which she had booked online and left. On the 9th, I dropped her mother and sister to Mehrauli police station and the same day I came to know that she was missing...."

Sneha’s body was recovered nearly 10 kilometers downstream from the Signature Bridge, in the Yamuna near Majnu ka Tila. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway.
